What difference has StudentSurvey.ie made in your institution?

Since 2013, over 300,000 first and final year undergrads and taught postgrads have used StudentSurvey.ie to share their thoughts and feedback with their higher education institution. But in that time what difference has StudentSurvey.ie made in your institution? How have the results been used to enhance the student experience across the 25 higher education institutions that take part?

We are asking staff and student representatives to reflect upon 9 years of StudentSurvey.ie and how this major national survey has made an impact in your institution.

What was the result that triggered a response from the institution?

Analysis of free text replies from students noted that there were specific areas that would enhance the provision of services in the Library.

These revolved around

  1. The provision of more books and journals in the library
  2. The provision of dedicated quiet study spaces
  3. The availability of group study spaces

What did the institution do to respond to this feedback?

As part of the Professional Services Review of the Library and Information Services, the Library staff reviewed the library space and this enabled them to address the concerns.

  1. More books and Journals were identified and purchased. Where feasible, e-books and licenced access to databases expanded.
  2. Redesignation of space with staff monitoring to ensure that there was an identified dedicated quiet space for individual study away from the major access areas has proved very successful.
  3. A specific bookable room within the Library was identified and this is now bookable for groups who wish to study together.

What was the impact of the response?

Restructuring the Library space has resulted in more engagement between the staff and the student body.

This has resulted in further sessions being piloted by the Librarian where there are open door sessions for students to come forward and discuss how to enhance the services provided by the Library.

The introduction of the Plan, Evaluate, Critique and Evaluate (PACE) programme supports students access the library services.

The success of this has been backed up by analysis of the free text replies from StudentSurvey.ie in 2020.
